Most of us know someone who has Alzheimer's but did you know that physical activity is one of the known modifiable risk factors for Dementia according to the Mayo Clinic? Watching someone you love suffer from cognitive decline is heartbreaking and often you hear people wondering why it has happened and whether it may be genetics. However, knowing that physical activity is one one of the modifiable risk factors for dementia is great. Because it puts a little bit of the power in our hands.
For National Wellness Month, I want to focus on the cognitive benefits of regular exercise and ways that you can incorporate a little more movement into your day.
Cognitive Benefits of Regular Exercise
First, Let's define "regular" exercise. Don't get overwhelmed, like so many others, and associate regular exercise with hours in the gym every day of the week. That's not sustainable. A solid workout routine will consist of 30-60 minutes of physical activity two to three times a week. Maintain regular physical activity for 6 months to a year in order to see the following benefits:
Can reduce risk of cognitive decline, including Dementia
Can increase the size of your hippocampus (the part of your brain associated with memory formation)
Can help you sleep better
Can boost memory and thinking skills
Promotes blood flow and the release of brain protecting chemicals
Can help manage symptoms of anxiety & depression
Positively impacts brain plasticity
Can delay the onset or slow down the progression of Alzheimer's Disease
