Svadhyaya- The Study of Self

Learn about Svadhyaya and reflect using journal prompts.

In yoga, there are five Niyamas, or observances. These Niyamas are internal practices that focus on our mind, body, and soul. Svadhyaya, meaning self study or reflection, is the fourth Niyama. In order to practice this Niyama we must be self aware. We must observe our actions throughout the day. Observe how we wake up, how we react to set backs, how we prepare for our yoga practice. Observe your actions in the moment and then reflect on them later.

"Step into the fire of self- discovery. This fire will not burn you, it will only burn what you are not." - Mooji

Here are two journal prompts to get you started.

  1. When is a time that you let an event control your actions and emotions instead of being in control of them yourself? And why do you think that happened?

  2. How can you make Svadhyaya more present in your daily life?
